Just a little lettering for a friend setting up a baking blog. Her brother bought my services for her for Christmas. She loved the gift, and had no part whatsoever in the design process. Everybody wins!
New Slang number three. RT is not quite politically correct, but as I am not a politician, I will tell you RT stands for “retarded tingle”. It’s the feeling you get when you witness another person say or do something so retarded, that an uncomfortable tingling sensation consumes your body.
The most obvious example of RT is watching Jeopardy! contestants tell their anecdotes. Trebek does his best, God bless him, to make the situation less awkward, but time after time, these nervous turds recount a story so incredibly retarded that the viewer is forced to either fast forward their tivo or plug their ears and say “lalala” the old fashioned way.
You might be thinking, “James, it’s not right to say ‘retarded’.” On one hand I agree, it is absolutely not right to describe special needs persons as “retarded” or call them “retards”. But when your friend with a normal IQ suggests your keep the tv on for The Wheel after Jeopardy is over, it is totally ok in my book to call him a retard. “You watch The Wheel? Pull your head out of your ass you little retard.”
Retarded Tingle is also known as “the jibblies” or “secondhand embarrassment”, which further describes the feeling.
Coined by my brother, not saying which one.
Continuing on with part 2 of New Slang. This is an easy one guys. Curr means cool. You might be thinking “why does the world need yet another word to describe something we like?” The answer is, “It doesn’t, but you’re bothering me. Stop it.”
The benefit of “curr” is that you can say something is “curr” (cool), or “nur curr” (not cool). If all language worked this way, English would be very simple, and rear curr (really cool).
Sneak this one into your next conversation, art school critique, or political debate, and watch with delight as your friends and collegues go off to lunch without you again.
This is part one of a project where I illustrate slang words that haven’t taken off yet.
“Snakes” is commonly exclaimed when one becomes unexpectedly nervous. It can be used more liberally whenever one is slightly uncomfortable. For instance:
Office supply store clerk: I’m sorry, we don’t carry Epson paper.
You: Oh, snakes.
Snakes was invented, and is currently used exclusively by my dear friend Crimer.
You guys! I just found out about these things that make graphic designs look way more cool AND edgy! It’s called photo shoppe filters and its suuuuper easy and fun, and just look at those graphix! Whoa!
I have but a single New Years resolution. The namesake for my typeface Duke, wants to get a “Don’t be dumb” tattoo on himself. This design hardly feels tat-appropriate, but I wanted to post it here because I like how dumb it looks.
Last year, my friends started a yearly treasure hunt in our home town on Black Friday. Naturally, they named it Blackout Friday. This year, it got pushed back until December 23rd, making it Blackout Friday, the Christmas Edition. Or BOFTCE. Now you know! I’m really excited, but my extremely non-competitive nature keeps me from winning in most games and contests. However, I do get to design the tshirt, so that makes me feel like a winner. All I really wanted to do with this design is make it as epic as possible, while staying off the computer completely (except for colors of course). I think it’s pretty epic.
Shown yesterday, as part of my thesis presentation at CCA. Music: Mahalo by Ratatat. Instructors: Dennis Crowe and Michael Vanderbyl.
In keeping with the blackletter kick I’ve been on, I printed some posters for an upcoming lecture by design collective Åbäke. If you’re around CCA on the SF campus at 7:00, stop by Timken Lecture Hall. They are a fasinating mix of different personalities from many different backgrounds tackling a number of various projects. Said projects are so wildly diverse, that I thought the kids at school should read about them, so I put it on the poster like five times. And I hung five posters in a row. Hopefully these dang kids get the point.
This was also my fist time combining ink jet with calligraphy. Super fun!
