My good friend Juan asked me to do some lettering on the wall of his new office in Los Angeles. The content and style was up to me, so I did one quick thumbnail, and just went for it with Montana paint pens. I would love to do more of this. Shout outs to Jeff Rogers, Dan Cassaro, and Espo.
A little glimpse at my process when working on a large lettering project. I’ve never attempted anything this thin before, and it was a challenge to space the characters correctly. Of course, consistently in the spacing was a challenge as the words needed to be on the same horizontal plane, while they are all different lengths.
This is a birthday card from my dear friend Helen Ip. She gave me this in a whole packet of other excellent treasures about a year ago. It remains one of my favorite cards of all time. Must have taken a long time to get all those stickers on paper. It photographed with a weird drop shadow, and I liked it.
I’m stoked to announce my latest collaboration with David Desandro. Previously, David and I worked on my portfolio which uses his amazing jQuery plugin Isotope. After that, David and I designed a logotype for his company Metafizzy. He’s always a pleasure to work with, and an amazing craftsman. One hell of a guy to meet randomly on the Internet.
I wanted a place to test my typefaces that was dead simple, and made it easy to share whatever words you wanted with the world. I noticed in chat conversations, I wanted to say certain things in the fonts that I’ve worked on, but there was no easy way besides taking a screenshot in Illustrator and emailing it.
That’s when I had the idea to create a simple site for sharing language in a certain style. I really hope people use it in this way, but if nothing else, it’s a great way to check out my type.
I must extend an enormous thanks to David for all his help on this project. He did all of the work, coding from the ground up, and it came out way better than I ever could have imagined. I’m lucky to have him on my side. Thanks David!

My folks moved out of our old house in Arroyo Grande, Ca in 2009. We started renting it, and I certainly miss partying there. It was the perfect party house. Big yard, pool, great bbq, and lots of trees.
The renters will be gone in August, so we’re making the most of it and throwing a huge party. If you are in or around the central coast August 25th, I hope you can make it.
I used Blue Danube china as the inspiration for this lettering, as it was what I grew up with, and something that always makes me think of home.
July 5th marked 1 year in the font business. In my first year, I released four typefaces, and yesterday, I released my fifth.
I wanted to say thanks to everyone that has purchased one of my fonts. Last July, when I realized people were willing to give me money in exchange for the work that I was doing anyway, it became my goal to live off the font business. In April, eight months after selling my first typeface, I quit my job and have been a “professional” type designer since. That’s really cool.
Also, I want to thank Riley Cran, the founder of Lost Type. I wasn’t sure how to release my first font, but when I saw Lost Type, I knew that it was the perfect place. Riley has been nothing but a pleasure to work with, and keeps me involved with how things on the site are shaping up.
From here, I’m not sure what’s next. More typefaces for sure. More weird/ dumb projects. I’ll graduate in a year, at which point I’ll probably move out of San Francisco.
So again, to anyone who has bought one of my fonts, or even anyone that has used one well, THANKS.
Robin has always been a great sister-in-law. When I was real little, she would always share her sodas with me, let me sit on her lap, and hook it up with bitchin Lego sets for my birthday. Recently, she got hard core into beekeeping. As someone obsessed with a nerd passion myself, I felt inclined to encourage her new nerd passion as much as possible. She needed labels for the honey harvest, and I spent way too long on this.
The Great Conor O’Driscoll interviewed me for his awesome blog One Minute With. It is certainly weird being interviewed. Lord knows I have nothing meaningful to say, but if you want to see a picture of me mostly naked, go ahead and see for yourself!
Also, this is the typeface that I’m releasing next week.
